I like to use the analogy of a cake. If your song is a cake, then the production is the ingredients that make up the cake. The better the ingredients, the better the cake.
Production is the composition and arrangement of the instrumental behind the vocals. A good producer will gather musical ideas for the project, help the artist turn their abstract musical ideas into a concrete, tangible product, suggest revisions or new ideas to improve the quality of the song, and more.
If you want your music to be of the same quality as the Billboard chart-toppers, you need to enlist a producer who has many years of experience in your specific genre. The producer needs to be competent in production and confident in his skillset to help guide you down the correct path.

Using the same cake analogy as above: if your song is a cake, then mixing is how you combine the ingredients to bake the cake. Mastering is the icing on top that glues it all together. Even if you have the best ingredients in the world, but the baker isn’t very skilled, then the cake still won’t come out its best. And on the flip side, a skilled baker can turn mediocre ingredients into a pretty solid cake.
Technically speaking, mixing is the combination of all the musical and vocal tracks of a song. It is the process of balancing the tracks so that each one sits properly in the mix and sounds pleasant to the ear. A good mix can greatly impact the perceived “goodness” of a song.
Mastering is the final step in completing a song. It is the glue that holds the whole song together. It is the process of balancing the elements of a song and optimizing playback across all systems and media formats. The main purpose is to make the song louder while also retaining its dynamics and not leaving it sounding “squashed.”
If you are serious about your music, hiring someone to properly mix and master your song is key. A good mix will bring your song from decent to utterly amazing, and a good master will optimize your song for playback on all platforms.

Each client’s needs are different. Some have nearly completed demos that only need a few bits of production added to complete it, while others have nothing other than an idea for a song. Some have songs to be mixed with 30 tracks, others have 70 tracks, and some have 200+ tracks. The amount of work that goes into each project varies, which is why the price varies.
